There are some things that will cause an applicant not to be approved thorough the initial application process. This is a list of the most common causes:
1) No Fenced Yard(area) Most dogs like to run and play and they need a safe environment to do so which means a fenced area. This can be a temporary, fold out fence from a pet store but they must have some place to run free and it must be located at your residence. A leash is great for outings but few dogs like to go potty on a leash.
2) Small children. I know many people think small child/small dog but that is not true. Small dogs are fragile and can be easily hurt accidentally by small children. Also many facial bites happen when small children pick up a small dog under the tummy and the squeeze hurts so the dog lashes out in pain and the result is a facial bite. Please visit this site to see some examples. Dog Bites and Children For the safety of your child and the rescue we will not place a dog in a home with a child under the age of 10.
3) You must be of the age to legally sign a legal and binding contract in the State of Texas. That age is 25 years old.
4) No large dogs. Large dogs and small dogs are not always a good mix. We have too many small dogs come in with terrible injuries from larger ones as well as letters from people who learned the hard way it is not good. Please read this visit this webpage for more informationBig Dogs/Little Dogs
5) Not being up to date on a current animal's immunizations. We Do follow the new shot protocol which says that dogs should not get yearly shots after the age of 2 years old, however, we do expect that titers are being done to assure that the dog has immunities to the diseases.
6) Having animals in the home that are not altered. We are rescue and we spay/neuter all animals prior to leaving. We realize that there are some circumstances where animals cannot be altered and if this is the case we will be happy to discuss this with you. Please read these articles to keep your dog healthy and safe:
7) We are very hesitant to adopt to young people who have not yet started a family because as in rule #2 small children and small dogs do not mix. We have too many dogs turned in after living with their families for years and then a baby comes and the dog must leave because of allergies, or problems between the two of them.
1) Why spay and Neuter
2) Why Spay, Mammory Tumors and Cancer
